Women’s basketball preps for Friday showdown at Fredonia

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State women's basketball team will be traveling to face Fredonia in SUNYAC play Friday evening with "Battle by the Lake" rivalry points on the line. Follow along at 5:30 p.m. from Dods Hall with VIDEO and LIVE STATS links.
 
History:
Buffalo State holds a 68-23 record over Fredonia all-time, with the series between the teams beginning in Buffalo State's inaugural season of 1965. The Bengals have won the last three games against the Blue Devils, including a 96-56 victory in the 2019-20 regular season finale. In that game, Liv LeBaron '20 set a Bengal women's basketball record with 41 points, adding nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
 
Eye on the Bengals:
- Buffalo State comes into the weekend with an overall record of 8-7 (5-4 SUNYAC) and sit in fourth place in a crowded SUNYAC table. They sit a half-game ahead of Fredonia with a game on hand. Buffalo State sits 1 ½ games behind second-place New Paltz and a full game ahead of seventh-place Potsdam.
 
- The Bengals have won three of the last four games played, all against North Country foes Potsdam and Plattsburgh.
 
-Buffalo State is featured in the national rankings this season. The Bengals are fifth nationally with 34.2 defensive rebounds per game, 28th with 47.1 rebounds per game, 31st in 3-point shooting defense (23.0 percent), and 35th in defensive field goal percentage (32.3 percent).
 
- Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putham) was named the Bengals Athlete of the Week after a great showing over the weekend, especially on the defensive end. Cornfield averaged 12.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, adding a team-leading 14 steals and three blocked shots. Against Potsdam Tuesday afternoon, Cornfield tallied a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double, including a key 3-pointer as the Bengals defeated the Bears 56-51. Against Plattsburgh the next day, the Gowanda native added 17 points, three steals, and two blocked shots in a winning effort. She leads the team with 8.5 rebounds a game, as well as leading the SUNYAC in steals with 3.0 in the past 15 games.
 
- Katie Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored 23 points in her last contest, continuing her great season. The senior guard is sixth nationally with 22.7 points per game, and sits sixth in Bengal program history with 1,273 points in 94 career games played.
 
Eye on the Blue Devils:
- The Blue Devils improved to 10-7 (5-5 SUNYAC) with three straight wins over North Country foes Potsdam and Plattsburgh, including a 56-42 victory at Plattsburgh.
 
- Fredonia is one of the better defensive teams in the nation. The Blue Devils are 13th nationally in defensive field goal percentage (30.8 percent) and 21st in defensive rebounds (31.9). They also lead the conference in blocked shots (66) and field goal percentage (38.6 percent).
 
- Katie Pitcher leads the team in scoring, with 14.6 points per game. She's also the conference leader in field goal percentage, making 47.2 percent of her shots.
 
- Renee Park averages 12.1 points per game and is the league's top threat from downtown, making a conference-leading 35 3-pointers at 36.5 percent shooting.
