Men's Hockey Wins Pivotal SUNYAC Matchup with Cortland to Close Fall Semester

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State men's hockey team penalty killers came up huge, scoring a pair of short-handed goals as the Bengals wrapped up the fall semester with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over Cortland on Saturday evening at the Ice Arena.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 4, Cortland – 2
LOCATION: Ice Arena – Buffalo, NY
RECORDS: Buffalo State (7-6-0, 4-4-0 SUNYAC), Cortland (6-4-1, 5-3-0 SUNYAC)

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Nick Stuckless (Orangeville, ON/Skidmore College) led the way for Buffalo State with two goals.
  • Joe Glamos (Baldwinsville, NY/New Jersey Titans) and Nikita Kozyrev (Tallinn, Estonia/Springfield Jr. Blues) each scored for Buffalo State. Glamos also picked up an assist.
  • Chris Blango (Chadd Ford, PA/Philadelphia Little Flyers) recorded two assists.
  • Emil Norrman (Kungsbacka, Sweden/Dells Ducks) made 25 saves in goal to record the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cortland dominated the opening period in shots on goal with a 10-5 advantage, but Norrman was up to the task for each shot in the frame as the game remained scoreless into the intermission.
  • The Red Dragons wasted no time opening the scoring in the second period, taking advantage of a miscue by Norrman when the goalie left his net to clear the puck, but instead sent the puck into the path of Anthony Bernardo, who deposited the puck into the open goal.
  • Buffalo State struck back three minutes later, as Stuckless ripped a wrist shot from just inside the point past Luca Durante for a short-handed goal.
  • Cortland netted another goal with a shot from the point by John Kuhl with under four minutes left in the period to lead 2-1 into the third.
  • Ethan Eliopulos (Richmond Hill, ON/Toronto Patriots) made a crucial play to step up in the offensive zone, before sending a pass to Aidan LaValley (Champlain, NY/Vermont Lumberjacks), who fed Stuckless for his second goal of the game, tying the score at 2-2.
  • After another Buffalo State penalty, Glamos intercepted a pass attempt to create a breakaway opportunity, then buried a shot into the net for the game-winning goal with under five minutes remaining.
  • The Bengals used a pair of Cortland penalties to their advantage in the final minutes to burn some clock.
  • After Cortland pulled Durante for the extra skater, Kozyrev was awarded a goal after a Cortland defender threw his stick to prevent a goal on the empty net in the final seconds.

FOR THE FOES
  • Durante allowed just three goals for Cortland, stopping 30 shots in a losing effort.

UP NEXT
  • The Bengals are done with competition until after the New Year, when they host Alvernia University for a pair of non-conference contests. The teams will play at the Ice Arena on Friday, January 6 at 7 p.m., and at Buffalo Riverworks for the Outdoor Classic on Saturday, January 7 at 4 p.m.
