Women’s Basketball wraps regular season with road loss at Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY – The Buffalo State women's basketball team couldn't recover after a slow start, as host Brockport picked up a 77-70 decision in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon.

  • Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putham) led Buffalo State with 18 points (8-of-16 from the field), adding five rebounds and three steals.
  • Katie Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Zavia Jaime (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) each added 13 points.
  • Brianna Smith (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield) added 10 points, shooting 4-for-5 from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams kept it close for the first eight minutes, until Brockport ended the period on a 13-7 run, leading 25-18.
  • The second quarter was all Brockport, as the Golden Eagles held the Bengals to 20 percent (3-of-15) shooting in the period.
  • Kylee Rosbrook scored the last five points for Brockport, as the hosts led by 19 (46-27) at the half.
  • Smith began the second half with four consecutive points, and consecutive Jamie 3-pointers brought the deficit to 11 (57-46) at the 1:17 mark.
  • Down 16 early in the fourth, the Bengals made one final push with an 11-0 run, as a Villarini 3-pointer brought the deficit to five, at 68-63.
  • Taylor James (Buffalo, NY/Frederik Law Olmstead) later converted on a layup off a timeout, bringing the Bengals to a one-possession, 73-70 deficit with 1:17 to go.
  • The Bengals had the ball with a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but the visitors turned the ball over, and Rosbrook answered on the other end to put the game out of reach.

FOR THE FOES

  • Chelsea Henry led all scorers with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Rosbrook added 18 points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots.
  • Brockport shot 50 percent (32-of-64) from the field and scored 19 second-chance points.

Buffalo State will prepare for the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament, as the fourth-seeded Bengals will host fifth-seeded Oneonta from the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
