Softball drops two on second day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Buffalo State softball team dropped a pair of high-scoring games at Legends Way field, falling to Augustana (Ill.) and Hamilton on an unusually cold and windy Sunday morning.

GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augustana (Ill.) – 11, Buffalo State – 3 (5 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An error in the bottom half of the inning led to Augustana's first run of the game.
  • The Vikings then erupted with a six-run second inning, highlighted by a Nichole Nash two-run single.
  • An error plated the Bengals' first run, as starting pitcher Oriana Castello (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet) scored on an error at right field.
  • The next batter, Caitlyn Parsons (Webster/Webster Thomas), struck for a pinch-hit double to right center.
  • Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) completed the three-run inning with an RBI single into right field.
  • Augustana scored once in the third and three times in the fourth to take an 11-3 lead.
  • The Bengals put runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings but were unable to draw closer as the game ended in five innings via the run rule.
  • Parsons and Kruse's RBI knocks were the only hits in the game for the Bengals, as they drew five walks.
  • Castello allowed three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings pitched, taking the loss in her first start of the season (0-1).
  • Olivia Carr (West Falls, N.Y./East Aurora) pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing four earned with one strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hamilton jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four frames, scoring thrice in the second and fourth innings, and once in the third.
  • Buffalo State struck back in the bottom of the fourth, as Jenna Wlostowski (Lancaster, N.Y./Alden) hit a one-out single into center field, scoring Elyse Crimi (Williamsville, N.Y./Sweet Home) to get one the board.
  • Two batters later, Castello ripped a two-out triple over the right fielder's head, scoring two to reduce the deficit to five.
  • Hamilton and Buffalo State scored a run each in their next frame on grounders, as the Continentals held a 9-4 lead after five.
  • Kiana Arcayena brought home two more Hamilton runners in their half of the seventh, on a two-out double into right field.
  • The Bengals scored in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of a Hamilton error.
  • The Bengals tallied nine hits in the game two loss, led by a 3-for-4 performance by Castello.
  • Parsons tallied two hits in her two plate appearances.
  • Carli Bogue (Elba, N.Y./Elba) took the loss, allowing four earned runs over 3 2/3 innings pitched.
