BUFFALO, N.Y. – The offense came alive for the Buffalo State softball team in the second game of the home-opening doubleheader, plating a season-high 13 runs in a 13-4, five-inning victory over Oswego. The Bengals fell 3-2 to the Lakers in game one.
GAME 1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bengals celebrated the memory of Buffalo State Hall of Famer and former softball coach Sandra Hollander before the contest, with Tom Hollander, Sandra's father, throwing the first pitch to open the conference season.
- Oswego began the game with a run scored on a Tai Smith double into left center.
- Clutch hitting gave Buffalo State a 2-1 lead in the second inning, as Jenna Wlostowski (Lancaster, N.Y./Alden) sent a two-out single into center field, scoring Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) and Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster).
- Oswego's Zoe Mennig led off the fourth with a home run to left field, tying the game at two.
- The Lakers would take the lead in the sixth, as a two-out single by Taylor DuBois scored Mennig from second base.
- The Bengals got runners on in the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't get the tying run home as Oswego earned the win.
- Buffalo State tallied eight hits in game one, led by two hits from Kruse and Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield).
- Carli Bogue (Elba, N.Y./Elba) took the hard-fought loss (1-6), allowing three earned in a complete-game effort, striking out five batters.
FOR THE FOES
- Mennig and Kylie Detz each led Oswego with two hits.
- Fiona Higgins improved to 4-3 with the decision in the circle, striking out 10 batters and allowing two earned runs in the complete game effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was not the most auspicious start for the Bengals, as Oswego scored three runs in the first inning.
- Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) answered for the Bengals with a one-out, run-scoring double to right field in the bottom of the opening frame.
- In the second, 'State tied the game at three, thanks to a two-out single by Oriana Castello (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet), later scoring on a wild pitch and error.
- The third inning began with Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) reaching on an error at shortstop, later scoring on a Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) RBI single.
- Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) hit a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat as the Bengals took a 5-3 lead.
- An error plated two runs two batters later, and Benton finished the job with an RBI double to right-center field, as the Bengals led 8-3 after three innings.
- The Bengals added five more runs in the fourth inning, beginning with a Wolinski RBI double to right-center field.
- More Oswego miscues kept the inning alive, as Kellogg and Sam Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) took advantage with runs.
- Benton once again finished the scoring for the Bengals with a two-out double to right center, scoring two runs to take a 13-3 lead.
- Makena Adams (Randolph, N.Y./Frewsburg) made her season-debut in the seventh inning, striking out a batter and not allowing a hit to end the game early via the run rule.
- The 13 runs and 14 hits were both season highs for the Bengals, with
Benton leading the way with a 4-for-4 performance.
- Parsons and Wolinski each tallied two hits, while Castello scored three runs.
- Olivia Carr (West Falls, N.Y./East Aurora) picked up the win in circle (2-3), shutting down the Laker bats after the first inning. She struck out three in four innings pitched.
FOR THE FOES
- Aleah Yaizzo went 3-for-4 to lead the way for Oswego.
- Madison Hoeflich took the loss (1-2), allowing six runs (three earned) on 1 2/3 innings pitched.
