Men's Soccer Shuts Out Fredonia, 2-0, in SUNYAC Opener

 
FREDONIA, NY – A pair of first half goals from Hosa Omar (Buffalo, NY/Lackawanna) and Manu Prieto (Cascais, Portugal/Salesianos de Estoril) led the Buffalo State men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Battle by the Lake foe Fredonia in its SUNYAC opener on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Bengals also earned two points towards the Lake Erie Cup, the year-long competition in all sports between Buffalo State and Fredonia.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Prieto netted his second goal of the season, while Omar season his first of the year.
  • Yousif Kowa (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Aladin Ali (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) each notched their first assists of the season.
  • Shae Wirt (Overland Park, KS/St. Thomas Aquinas) made five saves in goal to keep his third consecutive clean sheet.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals wasted little time in taking an early lead, as Omar scored on the Bengals' first shot attempt of the game in the seventh minute off an assist from Ali.
  • In the 21st minute, Kowa sent a pass into Prieto, who was able to find the back of the net with a shot to double the Buffalo State advantage.
  • The Bengals held on to the 2-0 lead into halftime and outshot the Blue Devils 10-3 in the first half.
  • Towards the end of the second half, the game became chippy, with Buffalo State receiving three yellow cards.
  • The Buffalo State defense held strong for its first conference victory of the season.

  • Kaleb Stewart led Fredonia with two shot attempts.

The Bengals are back in SUNYAC action this weekend, hosting Oneonta at 1 p.m. on Homecoming Saturday at Coyer Field.
