Men's Soccer Plays to 2-2 Draw with St. Lawrence

BUFFALO, NY – After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Gio Donofrio (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) and Manu Prieto (Cascais, Portugal/Salesianos de Estoril) each netted their first career collegiate goals, as the Buffalo State men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw against defending Liberty League champion St. Lawrence on Saturday night at Coyer Field.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Manu Prieto led the Bengals with a goal and an assist.
  • Donofrio scored his goal on his lone shot attempt of the game.
  • Jamal Belarj (Medford, NY/Longwood) also chipped in an assist to go along with two shots on net.
  • The Bengals outshot the Saints by a 12-10 margin, including 8-5 in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Lawrence fired a quick shot off the goalpost 15 seconds into the game that was corralled by Bengals goaltender Shae Wirt (Overland Park, KS/St. Thomas Aquinas).
  • Shots were hard to come by for the Bengals, who didn't have a shot on net until the ninth minute of the game.
  • St. Lawrence had another near miss off the goalpost in the 33rd minute.
  • The teams went into halftime scoreless, with the Saints leading 5-4 in shots for the half.
  • Gio Donofrio scored a goal off a feed from Manu Prieto for his first career goal in the 50th minute to open the scoring.
  • A foul in the box led to a successful St. Lawrence penalty kick just three minutes later to even the score.
  • St. Lawrence went up a score in the 57th minute with an unassisted goal.
  • Within minutes, the Bengals evened the game back up when Jamal Belarj found Manu Prieto in front of the net, who fired a shot into the top left corner to tie the score at 2.
  • The teams traded chances in the final minutes, but neither was able to find the winning goal.
FOR THE FOES
  • Marvin Sibanda scored on his only shot attempt of the evening.
UP NEXT
The Bengals will make the short trek down the road for the Fredonia Classic next weekend. They'll take on Houghton on Friday at 1 pm, and Mount St. Mary (NY) at 3 pm on Saturday.
