Buffalo State is saddened by the loss of former Buffalo State Football All-American and Buffalo State Athletics Hall of Fame member Paul Childress. Childress passed away on Friday, September 23
rd after a battle against colon cancer.
A four-year member of the Bengals' football team in the "Golden Age" of Buffalo State Football from 1991-1994, Childress helped lead the Bengals to their first ECAC Bowl Championship, as well as three consecutive trips to the NCAA Playoffs from 1992 to 1994. For his career, Childress totaled 126 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 21.5 tackles for loss, and was named an All-American in the 1993 season. He was inducted into the Buffalo State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
After graduating from Buffalo State, Childress went on to break power lifting records during an over 20-year career. His world records included maxes of 691 lbs. in the bench press, 1147 lbs. in squat, and 2663 lbs. in the "big three" (bench, squat, and deadlift) total.
Childress was also a Licensed Massage Therapist, working with professional and amateur athletes for over 25 years, with clients that played in the NFL, NHL, MLB, Olympics, and various levels of collegiate athletics. He also spent time as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the University at Buffalo.
Buffalo State Football will hold a moment of silence prior to the Homecoming game against Rochester on Saturday, September 30
th at 5 pm to honor and remember the life of Paul Childress.
