Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#5 Seed Women’s Soccer SUNYAC Championship Hunt Ends, Losing ‘Battle By The Lake’ Rematch

FREDONIA, NY – The #5 Buffalo State women's soccer team, making their first SUNYAC playoff appearance since 2016, dropped their first-round matchup against rivals, #4 Fredonia State Blue Devils 2-0, in their second 'Battle By The Lake' matchup this season.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Fredonia – 2, Buffalo State – 0
LOCATION: University Stadium – Fredonia, NY
RECORDS: Buffalo State University: 8-10-0 (5-4-0 SUNYAC), Fredonia State: 12-7-0 (5-4-0 SUNYAC)

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Kaylee Valentic (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) led the Bengals with three shots, including one on goal.
  • Addy Williams (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine) kept the Bengals in the game, making 13 saves in net, tying her career high in saves at Buffalo State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Buffalo State Bengals came into this matchup looking to get a sour taste out of their system, after dropping three of their last five games in the regular season. This matchup presented a unique opportunity in beating their rivals in the Blue Devils, while also advancing to another round in the SUNYAC playoffs.
  • In the first half, this matchup felt every bit of a rivalry, with the two teams battling for position on the field, but most importantly, a goal. After a back-and-forth array of shots from both teams, the Blue Devils would be the one to notch the first goal of the game, scoring in the 41st minute and carrying a halftime lead of 1-0.
  • As the second half began, the Bengals did their best in responding to the Blue Devils attack…but a goal in the 52nd minute would make things hard on the Bengals to comeback from. After a litany of shots from the Blue Devils, and one last push from the Bengals, the game was too far out of reach…ending the Bengals season.
  • The Bengals were outshot by the Blue Devils 35 to 7, with 16 shots on goal for the Blue Devils and four for the Bengals. This first round game would be the first time a 'Battle By The Lake' matchup would occur since 2014, where the Bengals won in penalty kicks.
FOR THE FOES
  • Katie Sellers and Gabrielle Irwin were credited with goals for the Blue Devils, with Jenna Hewitt making the lone assist of the game.
  • Abby Szymkowiak finished a full-game shutout for the Blue Devils, making four saves in the matchup.
