Women’s Volleyball Sweep Tri-Match on Senior Day, with Eyes on the SUNYAC Playoffs

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State women's volleyball team sent their seniors out in beautiful fashion, sweeping their tri-match series against the SUNY Geneseo Knights and the John Carroll Blue Streaks.  

GAME ONE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 3, SUNY Geneseo – 1
SET SCORES: (22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-12)

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville Griffith) led the Bengals 23 kills and 4 aces.
  • Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) dished out 24 assists, while also accumulating 11 digs.
 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Celebrating their 'Senior Day' the Bengals looked to carry out the momentum of a three-game win streak against the Knights. However, the Knights entered the matchup looking to ruin the mood and would do so as they took the first set win against the Bengals.
  • The Bengals would answer the call, making quick work of the Knights in the second set with a 25-15 win and clawing their way to a third set win 25-21, looking to clinch a game win in the fourth set.
  • In the fourth set, the Bengals would jump out quick on the Knights, taking a 10-2 set lead, after rallying six-straight points. This lead would prove to be too much for the Knights, as the Bengals would rally four-straight points and clinch their 18th win of the season, 25-12.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Kathyrn Barba led the Knights with 14 kills, while Carolyn Mack would lead in assists with 19.

  • Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville Griffith) the Bengals with 20 kills and three aces while Samantha Coakley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) would chip in with 13 kills and two aces.
  • April Jakubowski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) dished out 32 assists while Adi Vergara (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Kingdom Christian) would help with 46 digs. Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) joined the fun with 23 assists and 20 digs.  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Taking the drive up from Cleveland, OH, the Blue Streaks gave the Bengals their best swing in this matchup. Opening the first set, the Bengals would play on their heels as the Blue Streaks rallied five-straight points, taking an early 13-7 lead. However, the Bengals would answer back with two, four-straight point rallies that would push them to a first set win, 25-23.
  • The second and third sets of this matchup saw each team pick up crucial wins, with the Blue Streaks taking the second set 29-27 and the Bengals taking the third set with a 25-20 win.
  • In the fourth set, the Bengals would come from behind, rallying four straight points to take an early 10-6 lead, but the Blue Streaks would answer back with a six-straight point rally and regaining the lead 18-13…and wouldn't look back as they won the fourth set 25-19 and taking this match into a fifth and final set.
  • In the final set of the game, the Bengals would jump out to a 4-2 lead, with their eyes on the 15th point and the win. The Blue Streaks would fight back, taking a 11-9 lead on the Bengals, but rallying six-straight points, the Bengals would finish this set with a 15-11 win and taking the game series, 3-2.
FOR THE FOES
  • Hailey Williams led the Blue Streaks with 14 kills.
  • Haley Nicholson led the Blue Streaks with 30 assists, while Olivia Mogyordy would lead with 30 digs.
UP NEXT
The Bengals, clinching the #2 seed in the SUNYAC tournament, will get some much-needed rest as they await the winner of SUNY Potsdam versus SUNY Morrisville on Friday, November 15th at 7 P.M. This matchup will be played at SUNY Cortland.
