Softball Opens Season With Pair of Victories

Madison Lucas Throws One-Hitter in Game One, Bengals Rally Late to Win Game Two

CLERMONT, FL – Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) threw a one-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over Clarkson, and the Bengals used a five-run sixth inning to come from behind in a game two 8-6 victory over Worcester State, as the Buffalo State softball team kicked off the 2024 season with a pair of wins at THE Spring Games.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Lucas needed just 84 pitches to complete seven innings, striking out six batters for the victory. She also contributed a hit and an RBI at the plate.
  • Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Mya Hurley (Amherst, NY/Amherst) had a hit and scored a run.
  • Katie Pyszczek (Elma, NY/St. Mary's of Lancaster) recorded her first collegiate hit and RBI with a pinch-hit single.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State scored two runs in the first inning to take an early, as Parsons doubled to right center just past the outstretched arm of the centerfielder to drive in Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central), then Lucas ripped an RBI single up the middle.
  • After a shaky start, Clarkson starting pitcher Devin Fitzpatrick allowed just two total hits from the second inning through the sixth inning, a leadoff single in the second to Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) and an infield single to short by Parsons in the sixth.
  • Lucas was phenomenal on the rubber, surrendering a leadoff single in the first inning off the first base bag, and allowing just one other base runner the rest of the way on an error.
  • In the seventh inning, Hurley doubled to left center, and came home on Pyszczek's single just out of reach of the second baseman.
  • Lucas retired the side in order in the seventh to secure her second career shutout.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Fitzpatrick was the hard-luck losing pitcher, giving up three runs in seven innings.

  • Pyszczek went 2-for-3, while scoring two runs and driving in another.
  • Izzy Pezdek (Lancaster, NY/Grand Island) was the winning pitcher on the mound, allowing one earned run over two innings. She also drove in a pair of runs with a double in the sixth inning.
  • Emma Hooftallen (Round Hill, VA/Woodgrove) had her first collegiate hit, and a pair of RBIs.
  • Kellogg was 1-for-1, while also walking twice and scoring a run.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Worcester State struck for four runs in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.
  • The Bengals responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning with three straight hits, including doubles by Kaitlyn Schnitzer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Pyszczek. Megan Galbraith (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) also drove in a run with a groundout.
  • After three scoreless innings, the Lancers added a pair of runs by taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Bengals.
  • Buffalo State once again responded, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Hooftallen came through with a two-run single to right field, then Pezdek drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a double over the left fielder's head.
  • Erin Paolilli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) drove in another run with a pinch-hit single to center field.
  • In the top of the seventh, Pezdek set Worcester State down in order to secure the win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Jayden Kelly was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI for the Lancers.
 
UP NEXT
The Bengals are back in action tomorrow at 12:15 pm and 2:45 pm against Framingham State and Amherst.
