Softball Goes 1-1 to Open SUNYAC Tournament

NEW PALTZ, NY – The Buffalo State softball went 1-1 on the first day of play at the SUNYAC Championship Tournament on Thursday, falling to host and top seed New Paltz 4-3, before bouncing back with a 9-2 victory over Fredonia in an elimination game.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) went 3-for-3 with a homer, double, an RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Grace Albano (N. Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Sam Schafer (Depew, NY/Lancaster) drove in the third Buffalo State run.
  • Izzy Pezdek (Lancaster, NY/Grand Island) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals had runners on the corners with one out in the first inning after a double by Mya Hurley (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and an error, but a double play ended the Buffalo State threat.
  • With one out in the second, Lucas hammered a pitch over the fence in right field for a solo home run to put the Bengals up 1-0.
  • New Paltz tied the game with an unearned run in the third inning.
  • Buffalo State escaped danger in the bottom of the fourth, as Erin Paolilli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington), Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), and Katie Pyszczek (Elma, NY/St. Mary's of Lancaster) teamed up for a 5-3-2 double play to cut down a New Paltz runner attempting to score on a groundout.
  • Buffalo State went back ahead in the fifth inning on Albano's RBI single to center to score Samantha Kelly (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East).
  • The Hawks took advantage of another Buffalo State in the fifth to tie the game once again, then scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 4-2.
  • In the seventh, Buffalo State scored a run after Lucas singled and went to third on an error, and scored on Schafer's sacrifice.
  • Buffalo State then put runners on first and second with two outs, but couldn't get the hit to tie the game.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Isabella Shepherd was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Sydney Waldon pitched 2.2 innings in relief to earn the win.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Pezdek went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Buffalo State. She also earned the win on the mound, pitching the final 6.2 innings in relief without allowing a run.
  • Pyszczek had two hits and drove in three runs.
  • Lucas had two more hits and scored twice.
  • Parsons was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Bengals went down in order in the first inning, Fredonia took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Emily Chelius.
  • Buffalo State scored six runs in the second on six hits, highlighted by run-scoring singles by Paolilli and Pezdek, a two-run single by Pyszczek, an RBI double by Parsons, and a groundout by Hurley to drive in another run.   
  • Neither team scored until the sixth inning, when Pyszczek singled to left to drive in Pezdek to make it 7-1.
  • The Bengals tacked on another run in the seventh on an RBI double to left by Pezdek to drive in Lucas, who reached on a walk.
  • The Blue Devils loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, before Pezdek induced a flyout and a strikeout to end the game.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Chelius finished 2-for-3 for the Blue Devils.
 
UP NEXT
The Bengals' opponent for tomorrow will depend on the outcome of the 5:00 game between New Paltz and Geneseo. If New Paltz wins, Buffalo State will face the loser of the game between #2 Cortland and #4 Oneonta. If Geneseo wins, the Bengals will have a rematch with New Paltz.
