Women's Volleyball Earns Split At Final Day Of RIT Invite

ROCHESTER, NY – The Buffalo State women's volleyball team earned a split to close out the RIT Invitational today as they defeated Hamilton College in five sets before falling to Brockport in another five set contest at Clark Gymnasium.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville Griffith) finished the first matchup with 20 kills, just one short of her career high.
  • Kate Rutigliano (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) added 14 kills while Adi Vergara (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Kingdom Christian) had a team-high 15 digs.
  • Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) and April Jakubowski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) combined for 47 assists in the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a back-and forth start to the opening set, Buffalo State caught fire and rattled off a 15-4 run to take control.
  • Despite a late push from Hamilton, the Bengals were able to finish the first set.
  • The Bengals started strong in both the second and third set, however, the Continentals found their groove and took the win in both sets to push the Bengals.
  • Buffalo State clawed back and scored the final seven points of the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set.
  • The Bengals strong start to the fifth set was the key as they were able to hold off the Continentals to secure the win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Drew Stimson had a team-high 16 kills.
  • Pati Cerda tallied 38 assists in the effort.

  • Wittman led the Bengals again with 18 kills while Samantha Coakley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) added 12 of her own.
  • Shaffer added 32 assists while Vergara registered 12 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State came out strong in the opening set scoring six of the final eight points to take the set win.
  • The Golden Eagles retook control in the next two sets despite late pushes from the Bengals.
  • The Bengals scored nine of the final 11 points in the fourth set, capped-off by a kill from Coakley, to force a fifth set against Brockport.
  • After a back-and-forth start to the final set, the Golden Eagles rallied and scored nine unanswered points to earn the victory.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Alexis Sison led the Golden Eagles with 19 kills while adding 12 digs.
  • Kaitlyn Jewett had a match-high 45 assists.

The Bengals return to action on Wednesday as they will host Nazareth for their home opener at 6:00 pm.
