Men's Hockey Earns Weekend Sweep Of Chatham With 5-3 Win

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State men's hockey team came away with a 5-3 victory over the Chatham Cougars this afternoon at The Hunt Armory to sweep the weekend series.

  • Joonas Linnavuori (Helsinki, Finland/Wilkes Barre-Scranton Knights) led the Buffalo State offense with a pair of goals and an assist.
  • Vadim Kiriakov (Tyumen, Russia/Altay Ust-Kamenogorsk) also scored extending his point streak to seven straight contests.
  • Sutton Murray (Rochester Hills, MI/Pembroke Lumber Kings) picked up a pair of assists.
  • Drew Doran (Orchard Park, NY/Utica University) earned a third straight win making 19 saves in goal.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Linnavuori got the scoring started early in the first period before the Cougars responded to make the game 1-1 after the first.
  • Buffalo State exploded for three goals in the second period as Don Powell (Wixom, Michigan/P.A.L Jr. Islanders), Jake Meure (Fremont, CA/Ogden Mustangs), and Kiriakov each scored.
  • The Cougars would not go away quietly with two quick goals early in the third period cutting the Bengal lead to just one.
  • Linnavuori was able to seal the win for the Bengals with an empty net goal to register his first multi-goal performance as a Bengal.
  • The Bengals outshot Chatham 32-22 overall and improved their road record on the season to 7-0-1.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Three different Cougars scored with Zack Conner picking up a pair of assists.
  • Louis Finnegan and Cameron Kuntar combined for 27 saves in the effort.
 
UP NEXT
The Bengals return to action next Friday as they will battle the two-time reigning national champion-Hobart Statesmen at the Ice Arena at 7:00 pm.
