HOW IT HAPPENED
- Returning to the SUNYAC First Round for the second straight year, the Bengals looked to upset the New Paltz Hawks on the road.
- Similar to their first matchup this season on Coyer Field, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead with consecutive goals, quickly putting the Bengals at a disadvantage. The Hawks' third goal midway through the first quarter deepened Buffalo State's deficit, but the Bengals responded with one of their own to stay competitive. However, a late Hawks goal kept them ahead by three at the end of the first quarter.
- In the second quarter, the Bengals' defense held off the Hawks early, preventing them from adding to their lead. Buffalo State's offense then capitalized, scoring back-to-back goals and narrowing the gap to just one. Both teams traded goals throughout the rest of the quarter, and the Bengals added a late score. A strong final defensive stand sent the Bengals into halftime trailing by only one goal.
- After halftime, the Hawks regained momentum by scoring consecutive goals to start the third quarter, building their lead back to three. The Bengals responded in turn with two quick goals, again cutting the deficit to one. The remainder of the quarter featured strong defenses from both teams, and no additional goals were scored, keeping the game tight going into the fourth quarter.
- The fourth quarter intensified as possessions became even more valuable. After several turnovers and penalties stalled both teams, the Hawks broke through first, extending their lead to two. The Bengals immediately answered with a goal, making it a one-goal game once more. In the final minutes, Buffalo State had opportunities but could not convert, ultimately falling short to New Paltz by one and ending their season.
