Student-Athlete Handbook - Life Skills Program


Mission Statement: Buffalo State is committed to a comprehensive program of life skills that provides educational experience and services in order to develop well balanced lifestyles for student-athletes; encourages growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and enhances the quality of the student-athlete experience within the college setting. 

The Buffalo State Athletics Lifeskills program will:
  • Support efforts of every student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.
  • Use athletics as preparation for success in life.
  • Meet the changing needs of the student-athletes. 
  • Promote respect for diversity among student-athletes.
  • Enhance interpersonal relationships in the life of student-athletes.
  • Assist student-athletes in building positive self-esteem.
  • Enable student-athletes to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
  • Promote ownership by the student-athletes of his/her academic, athletic, personal and social responsibilities.
Commitment to Academic Excellence - To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. Academic Counseling, Orientation, Registration, Tutoring, Study Skills

Commitment to Athletic Excellence - To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well being of the student-athlete. Topics include Compliance, Title IX, Coaching Evaluations, Facilities, Media, Marketing.

Commitment to Personal Development - To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for the student-athletes, encouraging emotional well being, personal growth and decision-making skills.  Topics include Nutrition, Relationships, Sexuality, Alcohol and Drug Choices, Stress Management, Diversity, Values.

Commitment to Career Development - To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.  Developmental structure (freshman through Senior), Selecting a Major, Time Management, Job Search Skills.

Commitment to Service - To engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities.  Leadership Development, SAAC, Mentoring, Community Outreach Activities.
