Chris Bostwick completed his second full season as the director of the Buffalo State track and field and cross country programs in 2024 after taking over in the outdoor season of 2022.
During the 2023-24 school year, Bostwick guided his student-athletes to two national championships and nine All-America certificates. Natalia Sawyer became the first three-time national champion in school history, successfully defending her 400-meter hurdles title at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Myrtle Beach, SC, and the women's team finished tied for seventh-nationally at the meet.Â
During Bostwick's two-plus years at the helm, Buffalo State athletes have won four individual national titles, earned 13 All-America honors, 29 All-Region selections, 20 conference titles, and 60 all-conference selections. Both the men's and women's teams also ranked in the top 25 in the country concurrently for the first time since 2016.
Â
Bostwick came to the Queen City after working at the United States Olympic Training Center, working as an assistant track and field coach for the men’s and women’s Olympic and Paralympic teams. While in Chula Vista, Calif., Bostwick worked with five Olympians and three Olympic trials champions.  In his career, Bostwick has coached more than 100 NCAA qualifiers, including 50 individual NCAA All-Americans. His athletes have also broken national records for three different countries.
Â
Prior to his time with the Olympic Training Center, Bostwick spent eight seasons working as the assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach at Clemson University. During his time in South Carolina, he worked with the field athletes to incredible success, fostering the development of 53 individual All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) athletes, 10 individual conference champions, three ACC Athletes of the Year, 24 individual NCAA All-Americans, and two NCAA Champions. At least one of his athletes qualified for an NCAA Championship final at every season in Clemson, a streak that also extended for the past 18 seasons as a coach. Three of his athletes also represented the United States in international competition during his tenure.
Bostwick joined Clemson after spending six seasons (2007-12) as the jumps and multi-events coach at Michigan State. In his time with the Spartan program, he coached eight All-Americans and eight individual Big Ten Champions.
In 2012, he was named USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year. That year featured a student-athlete who finished with a bronze medal in triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earning a spot in the U.S. Olympic Trials, as well as a high jumper who earned her fourth consecutive Big Ten crown.
Prior to his time at Michigan State, Bostwick was an assistant coach from 2002-06 at Miami (Ohio). His athletes made four NCAA appearances, won two Mideast Regional titles and earned seven Mid-American Conference Championships. His athletes established 11 school records during the four-year run.
Bostwick spent two seasons (2000-2002) at Binghamton University as a volunteer assistant men’s and women’s coach. He coached the sprints, jumps and multi-events. He worked with a coaching staff that guided the development of six conference champions and 18 all-conference athletes.
Along with his collegiate coaching experience, Bostwick is a USATF Level III certified track and field coach. He served as a coaching education instructor for USA Track and Field, leading instruction in training theory, biomechanics, sport psychology, and physiology. He is also a member of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Bostwick earned his undergraduate degree in physical education and coaching from Cortland State. He was a graduate assistant under head coach Dr. Jack Daniels while obtaining his master’s degree in exercise science and biomechanics.
