BUFFALO, NY—Long-range shooting lifted Alfred (4-0) to the title over host Buffalo State (1-2) with a 62-46 win in the championship game of the Betty Abgott Invitational today at the Sports Arena. The Sage Colleges (2-2) defeated Hartwick (1-3), 62-52, in the consolation game.

Alfred trailed by as many as seven in the early going, but used a 12-2 run to close the first period with a 26-17 advantage. The Bengals closed the deficit to just three in the second frame, but the Saxons hit four-consecutive 3-pointers in a 14-0 run that put the game away. Alfred finished the game 11 for 23 from beyond the 3-point arc, compared to just 2 of 11 by Buffalo State. Lyndsay Murphy (Almond/Hornell) and Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson/Cornwall) paced Alfred with 17 points each, and Autumn McLain (Oneida/Oneida) added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sarah Thompson (Delmar/Bethlehem) was the high-scorer for Buffalo State with 12 points, and Divine Sebuharara (Vestal/Vestal) had eight points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman Kara Hackett (Peru/Peru) carried Sage to victory in the consolation game with 27 point and 17 rebounds. Elizabeth Donk (Phelps/Midlakes) added 11 points. Lauren Ploof (Hammond/Hammond) led Hartwick with 19 points and eight rebounds, and Jalicia Conell (Westbery/Hicksville) had 16 points, seven boards and four steals. The lead changed hands seven times in the first half, but Sage never trailed in the final 20 minutes. The Gators outscored Hartwick 40-26 in the paint.
