SCHENECTADY, NY—Buffalo State (0-1) outscored the No. 8 team in the nation 6-2 in the second half, but could not complete the comeback as Union (1-0) escaped with a 10-9 win in the season opener for both teams today at Frank Bailey Field.

Freshman Karen Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) led the Bengals' attack with four goals and an assist. Katie Henderson (Hamburg/Frontier) netted three goals, and freshman Kendyl Clarkson (Painted Post/Corning West) had two goals and an assist. Jennifer Tierney (Massapequa/Massapequa) added two assists.

The Bengals trailed 8-3 at halftime, and fell behind 10-4 before scoring the final five goals of the game. Neither team scored in the final 6:44. Union outshot Buffalo State, 36-18. Ashley O'Brien (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) made 13 saves for the Bengals.

Buffalo State will remain in Schenectady tomorrow to play Springfield at 4 p.m.
