BUFFALO, NY—Sandra Hollander became the 23rd softball coach in Division III history to reach 500 career wins as Buffalo State (17-9) won the second half of a doubleheader in dramatic fashion against No. 22 ranked University of Rochester (19-10) today at Bengal Field. The Bengals responded after dropping the opener 5-1 with a 5-4 win in the nightcap on a two-run walk-off single by Julie Joyce (E. Pembroke/Pembroke). Hollander improved her career record to 500-288-2 (.634).

Rochester opened the scoring one run in the fourth inning and then added four more in the fifth in the opener. The Bengals plated their only run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI by Sara Morse (Painted Post/Corning West). Buffalo State totaled five base hits by five different players. Jenna Frieling (E. Amherst/Williamsville North) suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

Buffalo State plated its first three batters of the game in the nightcap, but then the offense fizzled allowing the Yellowjackets to rally and take a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. The Bengals loaded the bases on a single, an error and a walk, before Joyce hit a one-out single to drive in the tying and winning runs. Joyce finished the game 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Marissa Mariano (Williamsville/Mt. St. Mary) was 1 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) pitched the win, scattering eight hits with three strikeouts and three earned runs.

Buffalo State will host Potsdam in a SUNYAC doubleheader on Friday.
