BUFFALO, NY—Junior Katie Henderson (Lakeview/Frontier) scored five of her game-high seven goals in the final 13 minutes of the second half to help lead Buffalo State (14-1/8-0) to a 14-12 upset over No. 15 Cortland (10-6/7-1) in a SUNYAC game today at Coyer Field.
Freshman Karen Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) had two goals and eight assists and became the first-ever Bengal to record 100 career points in a single season. Kendyl Clarkson (Painted Post/Corning West) had three goals, while Jennifer Tierney (Massapequa/Massapequa) and Liz Eddy (Albany/Colonie) chipped in one goal apiece.
The two teams took a 5-5 tie into halftime and knotted things three more times in the first 14 minutes of the second half. Cortland scored three goals in the span of 38 seconds and had an 11-8 lead at the 14:50 mark. But Buffalo State responded, scoring six of the final seven goals to earn the win.
Cortland outshot Buffalo State, 28-32, and Ashley O'Brien (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) had eight saves for the Bengals.
This is Buffalo State's first-ever win over Cortland, as the Red Dragons had won the previous 13 meetings and is also the first conference loss for Cortland since April 12, 2005. With the win, the Bengals also clinched the No. 1 seed and the right to host the SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Championship on May 1-2.
Buffalo State travels to Morrisville for its regular season finale on Tuesday.
