Softball Splits Against Ithaca to End Regular Season

BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (25-11) closed out its regular season with a split against visiting Ithaca (24-14), winning 2-0 and falling 6-3 in nine innings, today at Bengal Field.

Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) threw a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts in the opening game, and the Bengals made the most of their four hits, scoring runs in the third and sixth innings to seal the win. Nicole Maher (Waterloo/Waterloo) and Kyrstin Lekki (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) were both 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Buffalo State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the late game, but the Bombers evened the score with a two-run homer in the fourth and tallied four runs in the ninth inning to claim the win. Marissa Mariano (Williamsville/Mt. St. Mary) was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a solo homerun in the ninth for Buffalo State. Jenna Frieling (E. Amherst/Williamsville North) suffered the loss, allowing eight hits and five earned runs with six strikeouts.

Buffalo State will next play in the SUNYAC playoffs as the No. 3 seed on Thursday at Cortland and will face No. 4 Geneseo at 1 p.m. to open the tournament.
