Women’s Lacrosse Pounds Geneseo to Advance to SUNYAC Title Game

BUFFALO, NY-- Katie Henderson (Hamburg/Frontier) tallied six goals and four assists to lead Buffalo State (16-1) to its first-ever SUNYAC Championship game as the Bengals scored early and often, defeating Geneseo (10-6), 19-9, in the semifinals today at Coyer Field. Cortland (12-6) sailed past Oneonta (10-6), 17-8, in the other semifinal.

The Bengals set an NCAA Division III record, scoring eight seconds into the game and after never trailed. After leading 8-4 at the half, Buffalo State pulled away down the stretch. Henderson matched a SUNYAC tournament record with 10 points. Karen Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) had five goals and three assists for Buffalo State, and Mariah DeBolt (Waterloo/Waterloo) also scored five times. Kendyl Clarkson (Painted Post/Corning West) added two goals and an assist, and Jennifer Tierney (Massapequa/Massapequa) also scored. Ashley O'Brien (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) made nine saves in the win.

Laura Kitts (Camillus/W. Genesee) led Geneseo with two goals and three assists. Maggie Morris (Massapequa/Massapequa) and Abby Hungerford (Syracuse/Corcoran) scored twice each for the Knights.

In the other semifinal, Cortland raced out to a 13-3 halftime lead and then cruised to the nine-goal win. Lindsay Abbott (S. Onondaga/Onondaga) led Cortland with four goals and two assists. Danielle Torre (Massapequa/Massapequa) had four goals and an assist, and Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/CW Baker) had two goals and three assists. Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Acad.) had three goals and an assist and Megan Clare (Shirley/Wm. Floyd) scored twice. Rosemarie Fazio (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland) tallied three goals and two assists to pace Oneonta, and Brianne Ruzek (Mineola/St. Mary) scored twice.

Buffalo State, ranked 18th nationally, will host No. 19 Cortland tomorrow in the SUNYAC Championship game at 1 p.m. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
