OSWEGO, NY—Buffalo State (0-1/0-1) gave a valiant effort in its regular season-opener, but nationally-ranked No. 2 Oswego (3-0/1-0) defended its home ice against the Bengals in a 5-2 win before a crowd of 2,300 in SUNYAC game tonight at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

Oswego jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, before James Durham (Marilla/St. Francis) struck on the power play with assists from Kyle Granville (Lockport/Starpoint) and Jason Cleaver (York, PA/Central York). The Lakers added their third goal with just 27 seconds remaining in the opening period to reclaim the two-goal lead. After a scoreless second, the Bengals cut the deficit in half again with another power-play goal early in the third period by Zach Hale (Sandy, UT/Liberty) with assists from Cleaver and Justin Knee (Centralia, ON/S. Huron). Oswego responded again, however, doubling its lead again 10 minutes later, and then added a late empty-netter.

Oswego outshot the Bengals 37-31, and the Lakers were 2 for 7 on the power play, compared to 2 for 6 by Buffalo State. Freshman Kevin Carr (Unionville, ON/Unionville) made 32 saves in his collegiate regular season debut.

Buffalo State will play another road SUNYAC game tomorrow at Cortland at 7 p.m.
