Women’s Basketball Breezes Past D’Youville in Opener, 70-41

Erica Derby scored a career-best nine points off the bench
Box Score BUFFALO, NY—Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) scored a game-high 13 points to lead 12 Bengals on the score sheet, and Buffalo State (1-0) cruised past visiting D'Youville (0-1), 70-41, in the non-conference season-opener tonight at the Sports Arena.

Bianca Smiley (Amherst/Sweet Home) was the only other Bengal in double-figures with 13 points and she added six rebounds.  Junior Erica Derby (Troy/Tamarac) netted a career-high nine points.  Divine Sebuharara (Vestal/Vestal) pulled down a team-best nine rebounds, and Barb Kiliszek (Depew/Lancaster) added five points, five steals and three assists.

Kaitlyn Roland (Victor/Victor) led D'Youville with 12 points, and Megan McGrath (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) added seven points and five rebounds.

Buffalo State never trailed, racing out to a 32-15 halftime advantage, and never looked back.  The Bengals led by as many as 34 points in the second half, before emptying the bench and coasting to the win.  The Bengals committed just 14 turnovers and forced 24 Spartan miscues.  Buffalo State also owned the glass, outrebounding D'Youville, 52-36.

Buffalo State will next host the 23rd annual Betty Abgott Invitational this Friday and Saturday.  The Bengals will open against Hilbert on Friday at 7 p.m., and Alfred and Hamilton will square off in the opening game at 5 p.m.  The consolation and championship games will be held on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. respectively.
