Buffalo State Clobbers Alfred to Capture Crown in Women’s Basketball Betty Abgott Invitational

Buffalo State shot 51-percent from the field to earn a 37-point victory
| Box Score 2 BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (3-0) shot 51-percent from the field as it cruised past Alfred (2-1) for an 86-49 victory today in the championship game of the 23rd annual Betty Abgott Invitational.  Hamilton (1-1) dropped Hilbert (0-3), 68-45, in the consolation game.

Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) led the Bengals with 21 points, shooting 8 of 12 from the floor and 5 of 5 from the charity stripe.  Bianca Smiley (Amherst/Sweet Home) added 17 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, Barb Kiliszek (Depew/Lancaster) chipped in 12 points to go with six rebounds and six assists, and Kala Crawford (Middle Falls/Saratoga Springs) had nine points and six assists for Buffalo State.

Harley Cleary (Rochester/Our Lady of Mercy) led the Saxons with 14 points and five rebounds, and Lindsay Drummond (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg) had eight points and five boards.

Buffalo State used an early 14-2 run to create separation and led 40-26 at the intermission.  Alfred never got any closer than 14 in the second half, and the Bengals steadily pulled away down the stretch.  The Bengals forced 25 Alfred turnovers, while committing just 12.  Buffalo State dominated the Saxons inside, owning a 40-31 rebounding advantage, and outscoring Alfred in the paint, 46-12.

In the consolation game, Madie Harlem (Oneonta/Oneonta) led Hamilton to the victory, tallying 25 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals.  Her 51 points in two games tied a tournament record.  Kim Goidell (Centerport/Harborfields) added 12 points and four assists for the Continentals.  Julie Bossard (Arkport/Canisteo-Greenwood) had nine points to lead Hilbert, and Tiana Cheasman (N. Cohocton/Wayland-Cohocton) scored eight point and grabbed eight boards.

Hilbert scored the game's first seven points, but Hamilton used a 19-3 run to close the first half to claim a 42-23 lead at the intermission.  The Continentals stretch the lead to 31 in the second period en route to the 23-point win.  Turnovers were the story in this one as well, as Hamilton forced 31 Hilbert turnovers, compared to committing just 13.  The Continentals converted those 31 turnovers into 35 points.
