Women’s Basketball Slips Past Potsdam, 42-39

Dee Layne celebrated senior day with a 14-rebound performance

BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (15-9/10-8) scored the game's final eight points to pull out a 42-39 victory over visiting Potsdam (4-21/3-15) in the SUNYAC regular-season finale this afternoon at the Sports Arena.

Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) led the Bengals with 12 points and added nine rebounds. Senior Dee Layne (Brooklyn/E. NY Family Academy) chipped in four points and a game-high 14 rebounds in her final regular-season home game.

Buffalo State jumped out to a 13-4 lead, but shot just 20-percent in the first half and trailed 20-17 at the intermission. After a couple of second-half lead changes, the Bears led 39-34 with just under two minutes remaining. Kala Crawford (Middle Falls/Saratoga Springs) and McElroy each connected on a pair of late threes to erase the deficit. Barb Kiliszek (Depew/Lancaster) knocked down a pair of free throws and the Bengals got a defensive stop at the buzzer to secure the win. Buffalo State shot just 23-percent from the field for the game, and Potsdam shot 25-percent.

Buffalo State will travel to No. 4 Cortland as the fifth-seed for the SUNYAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
