BUFFALO, NY—Nationally-ranked No. 5 Cortland (10-1/3-0) pulled away from host Buffalo State (7-4/2-1) in the second half, snapping the Bengals four-game winning streak, with a 13-8 victory in a SUNYAC contest this afternoon at Coyer Field.
Karen Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) and
Kendyl Clarkson (Painted Post/Corning West) scored three goals each to lead Buffalo State.
Mariah DeBolt (Waterloo/Waterloo) and
Jenn Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) added single goals for the Bengals.
Buffalo State never led in the game, but stayed with Cortland for most of the way. The Red Dragons led 4-2 midway through the opening period, before the Bengals netted two goals in less than three minutes to even the score at 4-4. Cortland reclaimed the lead at 5-4, scoring with just 21 seconds remaining in the frame, and took the lead into the intermission.
The teams traded goals back-and-forth the open the second period, but with the score tied at 6-6, the Red Dragons assembled a run, scoring six of the next seven goals to pull away.
Cortland outshot Buffalo State 25-16 and owned a 20-12 advantage in ground balls. Buffalo State maintained a 12-11 edge in draw controls.
Ashley O'Brien (Penfield/Honeoye Falls-Lima) made eight saves between the pipes for the Bengals.
Buffalo State will look to start a new winning streak on Tuesday at Fredonia at 4 p.m.
