BUFFALO, NY— Bianca Smiley (Amherst/Sweet Home) netted 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead host Buffalo State (1-0) to a 70-48 victory over Alfred University (0-1) tonight in the opening round of the Betty Abgott Invitational.  Trine (1-0) defeated Alvernia (0-1) 64-58 in the first game.

The Bengals led 34-31 at the intermission, but opened the second half on a 21-3 run and never looked back.  The Bengals shot 44-percent from the field for the game, compared to 32-percent shooting by the Saxons.  Alfred outscored Buffalo State 18-6 from long range, but Buffalo State forced 25 turnovers and held a 42-16 scoring advantage in the paint. 

Smiley was 9 of 13 from the field to pace Buffalo State.  Ashley Wallace (Lockport/Starpoint) was the next highest scorer for the Bengals with nine, and Kala Crawford (Middle Falls/Saratoga Springs) finished with seven points and six assists.  Transfer Kelly Kell (Port Ewen/Kingston) added six points, five assists and four steals off the bench.

Heather Hebert (Hilton/Hilton) paced Alfred with 13 points, and Emilea Harrison (Conesus/Dansville) chipped in 10.

In the opening game, Trine used a plus-10 rebounding advantage to grind out a six-point win over Alvernia.  Sydney Spragg (Reading, MI/Reading) led the Thunder with 15 points and added nine rebounds.  Kelsey Henselmeier (Martinsville, IN/Martinsville) added 13 points and six assists, Kayla Dunn (Larwill, IN/Columbia City) scored 10, and Haley Killingbeck (Poneto, IN/Southern Wells) added eight points and 10 boards.

Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) led Alvernia with 17 points, hitting 5 of 15 from 3-point range.  Brittany Young (Columbus, NJ/N. Burlington) added 16 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, and Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) had nine points, five assists and four steals. 

Buffalo State and Trine will square off in tomorrow's championship game at 2 p.m.  Alvernia will take on Alfred in the consolation game at noon.
