CLERMONT, Fla.—Buffalo State (3-3) came up empty on the third day of its spring trip at the USA National Training Center, falling 16-6 to the University of Chicago (3-2) in five innings, and then 7-1 to nationally-ranked No. 3 Eastern Connecticut (3-1).
Chicago jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second before Buffalo State responded with six runs in the top of the third to claim a 6-2 advantage. The Maroons exploded for nine runs in their half of the third and added five more in the fourth to make short work of the Bengals.
Marcella Ossa (Williamsville/Clarence) was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to pace the Buffalo State offense, and
Kate Brownell (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) was 2 for 2 with a run scored.
Aleesha Williams (Cheektowaga/Pioneer) lasted just 2 1/3 innings in the circle, allowing seven hits and eight runs (four earned) to take the loss.
The Bengals could only convert six hits into one fourth-inning run in the second game. Eastern Connecticut scored four runs in the fifth and added three more in the seventh.
Kyrstin Lekki (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored.
Kaylee Lekki (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) surrendered nine hits with three strikeouts in the complete-game loss.
Buffalo State will enjoy a day off tomorrow before returning to action on Thursday against Colby at 5 p.m. and Tufts at 7 p.m.
