Softball Faces Elimination After Loss to Geneseo to Open SUNYACs

Shelly Maggard had three of the Bengals' six hits in the game
Box Score CORTLAND, NY—No. 3 Geneseo (22-17) scored five runs in the first two innings and posted a 5-1 victory over fourth-seeded Buffalo State (20-19) in the opening round of the double-elimination SUNYAC Championships today at Cortland's Red Dragon Field.

Geneseo jumped out to an early lead, plating one run on two hits and an error in the first inning, and then added four more runs in the second.   In that frame, the Knights took advantage of three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch, before chasing Buffalo State freshman pitcher Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central).

The Bengals got on the board in the third on an RBI double by Breanna Fenski (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) that scored Kyrstin Lekki (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) who had drawn a two-out walk.

Buffalo State brought the tying run to the plate with two away in the seventh after a pair of singles and Lekki's fourth walk of the day, but Fenski grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Shelly Maggard (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) led the Bengals' offense, going 3 for 4, collecting half of Buffalo State's six hits.

Coneys took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits.  Aleesha Williams (Cheektowaga/Pioneer) pitched the final 4 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit with four strikeouts.

Buffalo State will face elimination against top-seeded Cortland tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.  The Red Dragons were victorious in today's opening game over No. 6 Oswego by a 7-3 count.
