Softball Drops Twin Bill at Cortland

Stephanie Novo belted her first collegiate home run
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CORTLAND, NY—Buffalo State (8-9/3-4) came up short in both halves of a SUNYAC doubleheader at Cortland (10-10/4-2) this afternoon, falling 3-1 and 6-5.

Stephanie Novo's (Cheektowaga/Depew) solo home run in the third inning accounted for all of Buffalo State's offense in the opening game, as the Bengals mustered just two more hits the rest of the way.  Novo's blast to centerfield tied the score at 1-1, but Cortland plated two runs in the bottom of the third on back-to-back bases loaded walks that proved to be the difference.

Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central) suffered the loss, allowing just four hits and one earned run, but issued four walks to go with just one strikeout.

The Bengals let a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning slip away in the late game, as Cortland scored single runs in the third and fourth, before plating three more in the fifth.  The Bengals cut the deficit to 6-5 in the seventh, but stranded runners on second and third to end the game.

Shelly Maggard (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) was 2 for 2 with a run scored, and Breanna Fenski (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.  Novo added a double, an RBI and a run scored, and Jordan Dudish (Grand Island/Grand Island) was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Buffalo State had 10 hits compared to just six by the Red Dragons.  The Bengals used three pitchers, with Sam Tilkins (Grand Island/Grand Island) being tagged with the loss, throwing two innings, allowing five hits and four runs.

Buffalo State will play a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow at Ithaca at noon.
