CORTLAND, NY – Freshman Adonis Martinez (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) scored for Buffalo State (2-8-1, 0-3-1 SUNYAC) to tie things up in the first half, but Cortland (9-2-1, 4-0-1) managed to tally a late second half goal for a 2-1 win on Friday afternoon.
The Red Dragons jumped out to control much of the first half, tallying six shots and a goal in just the first 14 minutes of play. Ole Daumann scored for Cortland at 13:50, putting his own rebound into the back of the net.
Martinez tied things up at 32:10, heading the ball into the left post off of a cross from Francesco Cardillo (Tonawanda, NY/St. Thomas Aquinas (ON)).
Hunter Hein (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) tallied some big saves in the final 10 minutes of the half, as Cortland managed to get off another four shots.
The Bengals came out with two quick shots in the second half, but the Cortland goalkeeper made the saves.
Cortland regained the lead at 84:24 off a goal from Ole Topfer.
After a clock stoppage, the Bengals had one last chance to score. Hein put a long free kick into Cortland's box that bounced around, but the Bengals could not manage to get a foot on it.
Hein recorded the loss in the net. He recorded a season-high 10 saves.
The Red Dragons finished the game with a 24-15 advantage in total shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Buffalo State returns to action at 1 pm on Saturday afternoon for another SUNYAC matchup at Oswego.
