NEW PALTZ, NY—Buffalo State (5-9-2/2-4-2) failed to get the result it wanted, but a 1-1 tie against host New Paltz (4-11-2/0-6-2) today was enough to keep the Bengals alive for a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs entering tomorrow's regular-season finale.
Buffalo State got off to a slow start but built momentum throughout the contest.
Joe Vucic (East Aurora/East Aurora) opened the scoring in the 31st minute when he beat the keeper one-on-one after a midfield pass from
Bryan Daigler (Amherst/Sweet Home) sent him in alone.
New Paltz would answer in the 40th minute, however, when Jason Gonzalez headed the ball home off a set piece from a corner kick.
Chances were at a premium in the second half, but the Bengals took full control in overtime, but were unable to break the tie. Buffalo State had a 9-3 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks in the two overtime periods, but was unable to finish the Hawks.
Buffalo State finished with a narrow 22-20 margin in shots for the game.
Hunter Hein (E. Amherst/Clarence) finished with nine saves and had his shutout streak snapped at 350 minutes, 28 seconds.
Buffalo State will wrap up its SUNYAC regular season tomorrow at Oneonta at 1 p.m. The Bengals will need to defeat the nationally-ranked No. 4 and first-place Red Dragons and get a little help to earn their second-consecutive trip to the SUNYAC playoffs.
