FREDONIA, NY—
Hunter Hein (E. Amherst/Clarence) made five saves, including three in overtime, to preserve a 1-1 tie for Buffalo State (2-7-1/0-2-1) at Fredonia (7-1-2/1-0-2) today in a SUNYAC contest.
Buffalo State peppered the opposing goal with 13 first-half shots, compared to just seven by the Blue Devils, but Fredonia netted the opening frame's only goal. Aaron Hayes connected with a header on a cross from Vinny Chimento in the 18th minute to take the 1-0 lead.
Buffalo State finally broke through in the 77th minute when
Matt Wong (Coventry, England/Binswood Sixth Form) buried a shot from close range following a scrum on a corner kick.
Joe Vucic (East Aurora/East Aurora) was credited with the assist.
The Bengals held a slight 5-4 edge in shots in the overtime periods, but neither team could break the draw. Buffalo State ended with a 24-16 advantage in shots, but Fredonia had nine corner kicks, compared to three by the Bengals.
Fredonia went on to win the penalty kick shootout 3-0, which will only be used in the event of a tie between the two teams in the final SUNYAC standings.
With the tie, Buffalo State earned its first point in the "Battle by the Lake" rivalry competition, and currently trails 5-1. For more information about the "Battle by the Lake",
