Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla.—Buffalo State (0-2) dropped a 4-0 decision to University of Wisconsin-Stout (9-6) to open the 2014 season, and then lost a heartbreaking 9-8 decision to Bowdoin (10-4) today at the National Training Center Softball Complex.

The Bengals registered just three base hits in the opening game against UW-Stout. Taylor Swiatek (East Aurora/Orchard Park) was 1 for 1 with a pair of walks, and Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) added a single each. Buffalo State finally advanced a runner past second base for the first time in the seventh inning, but could not get her the final 60 feet to break the shutout.

Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central) was saddled with the loss in the circle. She pitched three scoreless innings, despite allowing six hits, before walking the first batter of the fourth inning. She was then replaced by Alison Novak (Amherst/Williamsville North), but the runner scored later in the inning and was charged to Coneys. Stout broke through for three more runs in the fifth. Sam Tilkins (Grand Island/Grand Island) came on for the sixth inning and allowed no runs and just one hit. The Blue Devils collected a total of 11 hits for the game.

Buffalo State scored two runs in the fifth and then produced a four-run sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead in the late game, but Bowdoin plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to escape with the victory.

Chrissy Rennard (Brockport/Brockport) was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs to pace the Bengals' bats. Novo finished 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Jordan Dudish (Grand Island/Grand Island) was also 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored.

Jordan Sarat (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) made her first start in the circle as a Bengal, allowing six hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings. Novak surrendered three hits and three runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief. After pitching a scoreless sixth inning, Tilkins took the loss, allowing a pair of runs on a walk, an error and a hit in the seventh. The Bengals allowed a total of 10 hits while committing five errors.

Buffalo State will play two more games tomorrow morning, facing Wisconsin-Whitewater at 9 a.m. and Kalamazoo at 11 a.m.
