Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla.—Buffalo State (1-3) scored 21 runs in just 12 innings and picked up its first victory of the season today at the National Training Center. The Bengals lost the first game today 12-10 against Wisconsin-Whitewater (3-0), but bounced back with an 11-2 five-inning victory over Kalamazoo (1-1).
Buffalo State took a commanding lead in the morning game against Whitewater, scoring nine runs on eight hits in the top of the second inning. The Warhawks stormed back, however, plating four runs in the bottom of the second, three more in the fourth and five more in the fifth to claim the two-run victory, despite being outhit 13-9.
Kate Brownell (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) paced the Bengals' bats, going 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored.
Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs, and
Jenna Clarke (Brockport/Brockport) was also 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
In the second game, Buffalo State converted nine hits and four Kalamazoo errors into 11 runs, including plating seven in the third inning of the abbreviated game.
Chrissy Rennard (Brockport/Brockport) was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs.
Shelly Maggard (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) was also 2 for 2 with two runs, and Brownell was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored. Clarke added a double and scored twice.
The Bengals used three pitchers with
Jordan Sarat (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) starting and allowing seven runs on four hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings.
Alison Novak (Amherst/Williamsville North) got two outs, but surrendered two hits and was charged with four runs, including the winning-run, giving her the loss.
Sam Tilkins (Grand Island/Grand Island) tossed the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and one run with three strikeouts.
Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central) picked up the win for Buffalo State, throwing four innings, allowing four hits and just one earned run. Novak threw the final inning and did not allow a hit.
Buffalo State will return to action on Monday with a pair of games against North Central and Union at 1 and 3 p.m. respectively.
