Becca Martinez (Syracuse/Corcoran) netted a team-high five goals to help visiting Buffalo State (1-0) earn a 17-11 victory over Hartwick (2-2) in the head coaching debut of Kelsey Schwan in today's season opener.
Meghan Farrell (Endicott/Union-Endicott) scored four goals for the Bengals, while
Niki Paulhardt (Hanover, MN/Oswego) added three goals and an assist.
Sarah Lorusso (Lakeview/Frontier) chipped in two goals and three assists.
Alexis Wilensky (Syracuse/Corcoran) picked up two goals and an assist, and
Ashley Coleman (Central Square/Central Square) also scored.
Martinez opened the scoring for Buffalo State just 28 seconds into the game and the Bengals never relinquished the lead. Buffalo State used a 5-0 run late in the first half and enjoyed an 11-6 lead at halftime. Hartwick never cut the deficit to less than four in the second half.
Buffalo State held a 32-28 advantage in shots and a 17-12 edge in ground balls, while each team committed 23 turnovers.
Colleen George (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) was in goal for the Bengals in the first half, making two saves while allowing six goals.
Brooklynn Schilling (Lancaster/Lancaster) preserved the lead in the second half, making nine saves and allowing just five goals.
Buffalo State will play another non-conference game tomorrow at Union at 1 p.m.
