Softball Drops Opener to Cortland in SUNYAC Championships, Second Game Suspended

Jean Stahl drove in the Bengals' first run vs. Cortland
Box Score ONEONTA, NY—Fifth-seeded Buffalo State (18-14) opened the double-elimination SUNYAC Championships with a 6-2 loss to No. 2 Cortland (25-13).  The Bengals and No. 6 New Paltz began an elimination game that was suspended due to thunderstorms until tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the Bengals leading 2-0 in the third inning.

Cortland plated a run in the first inning, but the Bengals answered to even the score on an RBI single by Jean Stahl (W. Seneca/W. Seneca East) in the top of the second.  The Red Dragons pulled ahead for good scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, however.  Buffalo State cut the deficit to 3-2 with a run in the sixth, but Cortland used a three-run bottom of the inning to put the game away.

Shelly Maggard (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) had two of the Bengals' six hits, going 2 for 3 with a double.  Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a runs scored, and Joanna Bardak (Amherst/Amherst) was also 1 for 3 with a run scored.  Kate Brownell (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) also had a double.

Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central) was charged with the loss, throwing 5 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs (three earned) while striking out five.  Sam Tilkins (Grand Island/Grand Island) got the final two outs, giving up one hit and one unearned run.
