Softball Knocks Out New Paltz to Stay Alive

Joanna Bardak was 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run and four RBIs
Box Score ONEONTA, NY—Joanna Bardak (Amherst/Amherst) went 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run and four RBIs and fifth-seeded Buffalo State (19-15) doubled up New Paltz (10-24), 6-3, to advance in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination SUNYAC Championship at Oneonta.  The game began on Thursday evening, but was suspended due to thunderstorms, and concluded this morning.

Bardak put the Bengals on the board with a two-run home run in the first inning yesterday.  The Bengals held the 2-0 lead while the game was suspended in the third inning, and then pushed the advantage to 4-0 in the fifth inning this morning.  New Paltz put a scare into the Bengals, plating three runs on four hits and an error in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to one, but Buffalo State answered with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame to get some breathing room.

The Bengals finished with nine hits, including the three by Bardak.  Shelly Maggard (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) was 2 for 4 with an RBI.  Jenna Clarke (Brockport/Brockport) also had a pair of hits for Buffalo State.

Freshman Alison Novak (Amherst/Williamsville North) recorded the win for Buffalo State, throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing four hits and three unearned runs.  Sam Tilkins (Grand Island/Grand Island) picked up her third save of the season, throwing the final 1 2/3 innings.  Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central) started the game yesterday, pitching two innings and giving up just two hits.

Buffalo State will play another elimination game later today at approximately 2:30 p.m. against the loser of the Cortland/Brockport game which is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
