Box Score ONEONTA, NY—Buffalo State (19-16) and Cortland (27-14) combined for 27 hits and 20 runs in just six innings, but the Red Dragons prevailed 14-6, ending the Bengals season today at the double-elimination SUNYAC Championships in Oneonta.
Cortland led 2-1 after the first inning and then pushed the lead to 7-1 in the second inning with the help of a grand slam. Buffalo State battled back and cut the deficit to 8-6 in the fourth inning, but the Red Dragons plated three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to put the game away.
Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) had three of Buffalo State's 11 hits, going 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.
Shelly Maggard (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while
Kate Brownell (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) finished 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Joanna Bardak (Amherst/Amherst) added a pair of RBIs.
Buffalo State used three pitchers that combined to allow 16 hits the Bengals also committed five errors in the field.
Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central) was charged with the loss, giving up a pair of runs in just 2/3 of an inning.
Alison Novak (Amherst/Williamsville North) also just lasted 2/3 of an inning, giving up four hits and five runs (four earned), before
Sam Tilkins (Grand Island/Grand Island) went the rest of the way, surrendering 10 hits with seven runs (five earned).
Maggard and Bardak were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Buffalo State finished the season 19-16. Cortland defeated Buffalo State earlier in the tournament on Thursday, 6-2.
