PITTSBURGH—No. 5 Mount Union (12-1) dealt Buffalo State (8-5) a straight-sets defeat in today's opening match, but the Bengals prevailed in five sets in the late match over Mary Washington (10-4) to conclude the Carnegie Mellon Invitational today.
Nationally-ranked Mount Union prevailed 25-16, 25-18 and 25-14 in the morning match.
Courtney White (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) had six kills and five blocks, while
Kayla Pyc (Grand Island/Grand Island) added six kills and four blocks for the Bengals.
Jennifer Cecchettini (Hamburg/Frontier) dished out 18 assists, while
Rachelle Kelchlin (West Seneca/St. Mary's) had a team-high 12 digs.
The Bengals outlasted Mary Washington in the late match, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 10-25 and 15-12.
Hannah Renaldo (N. Collins/N. Collins) led the Buffalo State attack with 10 kills to go with three blocks.
Britt Hallett-Jonathan (Basom/Akron) had 37 assists and eight digs, and White added seven kills and four blocks. Kelchlin added a team-high 14 digs.
Buffalo State will travel to the University of Rochester this Tuesday for a non-conference tune-up before opening SUNYAC play next weekend.
