GENESEO, NY—Freshman goalkeeper
Jessica McCarey (Middletown/Middletown) made a career-best 11 saves, but it was not enough as visiting Buffalo State (3-4-2/1-1) dropped a 2-1 double-overtime decision to Geneseo (7-2-1/1-1) this afternoon in a SUNYAC battle.
The game remained scoreless after an even first half that saw Geneseo post a slight 8-7 edge in shots. The Knights began to tilt the field in the second half and took a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute on a goal by Kelsey Raschke with an assist from Leah Greene. Buffalo State was able to net the equalizer in the 78th minute on an own goal after
Katie Shaw (Burt/Newfane) forced a turnover and sent a cross that a Geneseo defender misplayed into her own goal.
Geneseo continue to apply the pressure in the overtime session, directing six shots toward the Bengals' goal, compared to no attempts by Buffalo State. That sixth shot finally ended the contest, when Green sent a ball off a controversially-awarded corner kick from Erin Froehlich with just 3:04 remaining.
Geneseo finished with a 26-9 advantage in shots, and a 4-2 margin in corner kicks.
Buffalo State will travel to Alfred State on Thursday for a non-conference game under the lights at 7 p.m.
