OSWEGO, NY—Buffalo State (10-7/1-2) dropped a four-set match to host Oswego (10-10/2-1), but then righted the ship and picked up its first SUNYAC victory of the season, defeating Geneseo (15-3/2-1) in four sets to close out the first round of Pool Play.
The Bengals jumped out front in the early match, winning the opening set 25-21, but then Oswego rallied to claim the next three, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-23, to stun the Bengals.
Buffalo State was again hampered by unforced errors, posting an attack percentage of just 13-percent, with 30 hitting errors, and also had 10 service errors.
Sam Parente (E. Patchogue/Bellport) and
Kayla Pyc (Grand Island/Grand Island) powered the offense with 13 and 12 kills respectively.
Jessica Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) added eight kills and five blocks, while
Courtney White (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) also had eight kills.
Jennifer Cecchettini (Hamburg/Frontier) had a career-best 42 assists, and
Rachelle Kelchlin (West Seneca/St. Mary's) had 21 digs.
The Bengals reversed their fortunes in the late match against Geneseo, this time dropping the first set, 22-25, and then ripping off three straight, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21.
Buffalo State's offense found a new gear, hitting 21.5-percent and the Bengals also produced 13 blocks in the victory. Parente led the attack again with 14 kills to go with four blocks. Pyc added 10 kills, while
Hannah Renaldo (N. Collins/N. Collins) chipped in nine kills and three blocks. White had a team-best seven blocks with six kills. Cecchettini again had 42 assists and 12 digs.
Buffalo State will compete in the Fredonia Classic next weekend and will open with matches against Frostburg State and RIT on Friday at 6 and 8 p.m. respectively.
