ROCHESTER, NY—
Jason Zaleski (Scranton, PA/Scranton) scored 3:41 into overtime and
Ian Sylves (Sloan, NY/JFK) finished with 32 saves as Buffalo State (5-8-2) escaped with a 3-2 victory over host Nazareth (5-6-3) in a non-conference game tonight at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
Nazareth outshot the Bengals 13-1 in the opening frame, but only had a 1-0 advantage to show for it at the first intermission. Buffalo State played a more even second stanza and netted the period's only goal when
Nick Melligan (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored his fourth of the season and first since opening night.
The Bengals killed off a penalty early in the third period and then took its first lead of the game just moments later when
Scott Roy (Rockland, ON/ESC L'Escale) fired a shot in the top corner for his second goal of the season.
Ryan Demyen (Hubbard, OH/Hubbard) earned the lone assist. Nazareth knotted the score at 2-2, however, tallying a power-play goal in the middle of the period.
Zaleski netted the game-winner when he slipped the puck through the goalie's legs on a breakaway for his seventh of the year with an assist from
Sean Hrivnak (Laval, QC/College Laval). Zaleski has scored five goals in the last three games and has points in the last four.
Nazareth doubled up the Bengals in shots on goal for the game, 34-17, but Sylves kept Buffalo State in the game, and Buffalo State produced the only five shots of the overtime period. The Bengals finished 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Golden Flyers finished 1 for 6.
Buffalo State will play two more road non-conference games next weekend, beginning with a visit to Pawtucket, RI to face Johnson & Wales on Friday at 7 p.m. The Bengals defeated the Wildcats in Buffalo in December, 5-3.
