Women’s Basketball Wins in Final Seconds, Beats Plattsburgh, 59-58

BUFFALO, NY – Senior Ashley Wallace (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) hit two free throws with five seconds remaining to lead Buffalo State to a thrilling 59-58 conference victory over Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon at Sports Arena that capped off a 2-0 finish in the SUNYAC for the weekend.

Wallace paced the Bengals offense with 18 points, finishing 7-10 from the floor and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. Brittnee Perry (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jordan Yastremski (Bath, NY/Bath-Haverling) chipped in eight points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the opening minutes of the game. Plattsburgh was the first to get on the scoreboard with a free throw at 19:05. The score remained 1-0 until the Cardinals added two points off a layup at 15:45. Niasha Houpe (Rochester, NY/William Floyd) tallied Buffalo State's first points of the game after pulling down an offensive board and finishing on a layup at 15:25.

Plattsburgh managed to keep hold of the lead until Clarisa Matias (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) sank a three pointer with 8:42 left to give the Bengals a two point lead, their first of the game. Buffalo State held onto the lead and went into halftime up by five points.

In the second half, the Cardinals slowly chipped away at the Bengals lead. With 13:23 on the clock two free throws from Plattsburgh put them back in the lead.

With 5:54 left to play, the Bengals found themselves trailing by eight points, but were not ready to give up. Buckling down, Buffalo State was able to tie things back up and earn the win with just five seconds left. Wallace ripped down an offensive rebound off of a missed free throw, earning a trip to the free throw line and a chance to give the Bengals the win. The senior stepped up and sunk both to put Buffalo State up 59-58. The Cardinals managed a shot in the last second, but it came up short.

Buffalo State finished the night shooting 40% (26-65) from the floor, 10% (1-10) from long range and 46.2% (6-13) from the free throw line, while outrebounding the Cardinals 41-38.

The Bengals return to action next Friday at 7:30 p.m. for a SUNYAC matchup at Brockport.
