Justine Silva (El Monte, CA/Arroyo) made a stop on a breakaway just moments later to keep the deficit at just one. Buffalo State regained momentum and continued to pour on the pressure until Krantz finally broke through late in the frame with her second of the season.
Goals came early and often for both teams in the second period with Goodwin giving the Bengals their first lead just 21 seconds in on a one-timer on the power play. William Smith capitalized on a 5-on-3 to even the score less than three minutes later, by Buffalo State regained the lead on the same power play with a shorthanded breakaway goal by Mallon. The Herons evened the score at 3-3 with a breakaway goal of its own just as it finished killing off a penalty. The Bengals pulled ahead once again a Carroll's fifth goal of the season with just over five minutes remaining, but the Herons potted a rebound goal just 33 seconds later to send the game into the third period tied at 4-4.
Buffalo State finally created separation in the final frame, starting with Goodwin's second of the game and 17th of the season which proved to be the eventual game-winner less than four minutes into the period. The Bengals added two more goals just 32 seconds apart later in the stanza, with Mish scoring her first as a Bengal with a slap shot from the point that sailed into the top corner, before Krantz completed the scoring with her second of the game.
The Bengals finished with a 41-18 edge in shots and both teams went 1 for 5 on the power play. Silva totaled 14 saves in the win.
Buffalo State will host the Herrons again tomorrow at 5 p.m.
