Men’s Soccer Shuts Down Fredonia, 2-0

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Bass Sarr (New York/JREC) and Luke Pavone (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) each scored to lead Buffalo State past Fredonia 2-0 in a SUNYAC matchup on Saturday afternoon as the Bengals tallied their third-straight victory.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 2, Fredonia - 0
LOCATION:  Coyer Field – Buffalo, N.Y.
RECORDS:  Buffalo State (8-2-2, 2-0-1 SUNYAC), Fredonia (1-7-2, 0-2-1 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State wasted little time getting on the board. Alex Cassells (London, England/Woking College) sailed a free kick 40 yards and found Sarr, whose header connected perfectly, sending the ball into the top right corner of the net.
  • Early in the second half, the Bengals came close to pushing their lead to two as a shot by Sammy Wasson (Clarence/Clarence) seemed to roll off the Fredonia goalkeepers fingers, but he was able to grab the ball just before it slipped in.
  • The Blue Devils thought they had evened the score in the 53rd minute, but the officials called a handball and the goal did not count.
  • Pavone gave Buffalo State a little breathing room, putting the Bengals up 2-0 after ripping a shot that went just under the crossbar on a free kick in the 54th minute.
  • Fredonia pushed their offense towards the end of the second half, but four big saves from William Banahene (Rochester/Brighton) stopped the Blue Devils from gaining any momentum.
  • The Bengals played the final 19 minutes of the game up a man because of a Fredonia red card.
  • Banahene earned his fourth shutout and recorded six saves in the win.
FOR THE FOES
  • Parker Healy had four shots, including two shots on goal.
  • Austin Santor recorded the loss in net and tallied five saves.

NOTEWORTHY
