Women’s Hockey Drops Cortland, 3-1; Clinches Playoff Berth, Sets School Record for League Wins in Season

CORTLAND, NY—Buffalo State (10-10-2/8-7-0) scored the final three goals of the game to post a 3-1 victory over host Cortland (5-14-2/4-9-2) in an ECAC West contest this afternoon.  The win is the Bengals' eighth conference victory of the season, setting a school single-season record.  The win also clinches a playoff berth for the second-consecutive season for the first time since 2001-02 and 2002-03.

Erin Gehen (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and Christine Harris (Mountain Top, PA/Wyoming Seminary) had a goal and an assist each for the Bengals, and Nikki Kirchberger (Buffalo/W. Seneca West) also scored.

Cortland jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 4:21 into the game, but Gehen's power-play goal from Harris less than three minutes later tied the score at 1-1.  Harris scored what proved to be the game-winner midway through the middle stanza with assists from Gehen and Jeyna Minnick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia) to give the Bengals their first lead.  Kirchberger added the insurance marker in the third period with assists by Missy Mallon (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Caitie Horvatits (Elma, NY/Iroquois).

Buffalo State held a 33-29 advantage in shots, and Justine Silva (El Monte, CA/Arroyo) made 28 saves between the pipes for the victory.

Buffalo State will play at Cortland again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
