CLERMONT, Fla. – Buffalo State's (2-4) dropped games against Middlebury (2-0), 5-4, and Lawrence(2-2), 9-2, on a blistering Saturday afternoon at the National Training Center Softball Complex.
A comeback from the Bengals in game one fell just short. Middlebury took advantage of four costly Buffalo State errors in the first inning, scoring four runs. The Bengals cut the Panthers lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third. Middlebury added a fifth run in the top of the fifth inning to go up 5-2. The Buffalo State defense held the Panthers in the final two innings, however, the Bengals could only muster two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) finished the game 1 for 2 with two runs and two walks. Alexis Haley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas), Kara Stein (Amherst, NY/Amherst), Jean Stahl (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) and Melissa Magiera (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) each tallied an RBI.
Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) recorded the loss in the circle. She pitched the first four innings, allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Alison Novak (Amherst, NY/Williasmville North) finished the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout.
Errors plagued the Bengals in game two as well. Lawrence used four hits and two Bengal errors to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Vikings took advantage of another two Bengal errors with two more runs in the third innings. Buffalo State recorded its first run of the game in the top of the fourth after a sacrifice fly from Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) scored Gorski. A double from Stahl in the next inning brought the Lawrence lead down to four, but the Vikings added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win.
Haley recorded the loss in the circle. She pitched the first 2.2 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Jordan Sarat (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) pitched the next 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on one hit with two strikeouts. Novak closed out the final 1.2 innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits with one strikeout.
